robert sinclair

Robert Sinclair enjoys photographing people, places, and things. For 50+ years he has used the camera and chemical and digital darkrooms to create photographic imagery for his own enjoyment and that of others. His primary goals are to enjoy the struggles and achievements inherent in the processes of making creative visual output. Robert Sinclair's singular works are typically guided by his considerations of a broader idea or thesis that may develop into a larger body of work.

Robert Sinclair was drawn to the camera in his youth, purchased his first SLR and built a darkroom in his teens, and has had a camera nearby ever since. Having consciously and purposefully made photographs for over 50 years, Robert Sinclair believes he has “taken plenty of pictures”, and is now driven to utilize his decades of experience to recognize when the picture comes to him. Today he resists the need to make a picture unless the urge makes it apparent. To assist him in maintaining the discipline necessary to approach photographic image-making in this manner, and to produce the highest quality prints, much of his work today is made with medium format digital equipment having the largest and state of the art image sensors, technical or "field" cameras, and the highest quality camera optics. In addition to the stunning image quality this equipment is capable of producing, he has found that these force the camera artist to slow down their processes and more fervently consider the desired resulting image long before the shutter is released. His photographic toolkit includes equipment made by Phase One, Arca-Swiss, Hasselblad, Mamiya, Leica, and Canon, and further includes optics by Rodenstock and Schneider-Kruzenach.

Robert Sinclair's works are held in private collections in homes and offices throughout the United States. Between excursions to seek out fish with his fly rod, or wander about in some remote location that may capture his attention and find its way through the lens of his camera, he is located in Dallas, Texas.
